Empower Your Team: It Starts With 4 Simple Words.
A few years back, I had a conversation with a team member that really stuck with me. We were talking about future plans, when out of nowhere, she brought up something I’d said weeks prior. Turns out, those few words had completely changed her perspective on her work, leaving her feeling joyful and purposeful.
What was it? I'd stopped by her office for an assignment, but instead of just saying, "Can you get this done by tomorrow?" the first words out of my mouth were, "I need your help." Honestly, I couldn't even recall the moment! It wasn't intentional, but for her, those four words made all the difference.
She explained that by starting with "I need your help," I was communicating that we were partners, and her input was valuable. She felt more needed than ever before. It was collaborative and empowering, not just another task.
It got me thinking. Whenever a leader has asked for my help, I've never thought, "Ugh, more work." Quite the opposite! I've always felt a bit special, empowered, and energized. Subconsciously, I believe they could have picked anyone, but they chose me because they trusted I could get it done.
So, next time you need a team member to take on more, try this: start with, "I need your help..." Then, pause. Let them respond with a "How can I help?" before you dive into the details. That simple shift reframes the assignment in their mind, inspiring them to "help the boss and the team" instead of just adding another item to their to-do list.
